Appliances - Ovens

With so many different brands of appliances on the market, choosing your oven can be overwhelming. Basically, most ovens have the same functions and we hope to explain them in layman's terms:

  • Grilling - most ovens now have closed door grilling which will eliminate odours and smoke in the kitchen. Some models also have grilling with fan assistance.
  • Convection Cooking - this is when you bake with the top and bottom element only
  • Fan assisted Cooking - When you use the top and bottom element along with the fan. The whole oven is heated and the fan circulates the heat evenly. This is probably the most popular function for cooking multiple trays and dishes.
  • Fan Forced - sometimes confused with Fan assisted this is a function where there is also an element around the fan. When items are placed on the shelf in front of the fan the fan pushes the heat directly onto it before heating the rest of the oven. Very good for quickly heating smaller items.
  • Fully programmable- Usually accompanied with a digital clock, allows you to preset the timer of the oven to come on or go off as apposed to manual timers on the more basic models

Of course a lot of brands have other functions or use different terminology however the basic understanding will help with your selection of what you require

600mm Underbench / Wall Mounted
The smallest size oven that can be placed under the bench or wall mounted. Usually the European Brands are of around 59litre capacity however Australian brands can be slightly larger internally. European ovens have the grill inside the oven as it easier to clean out one big cavity, however there are still some Australian models with separate grill.

Mounting a 600mm oven in a tall unit at the right height can enable you to place your microwave above it, saving valuable wall space. Some ovens are now available that open from the side as your microwave does.

Wall double
For the large family or the entertainer the double oven is a practical option as it gives you so many options. One oven generally has multiple functions whilst the other is more basic. However space may be an issue in a smaller kitchen design. There are also many 1 1/2 ovens available which usually means a separate grill.
900mm Underbench / Wall Mounted
Traditionally placed under the Bench this size also works very well mounted at bench level. Most appropriate for the serious cook who cooks large amounts often. Fan forced function in this size is practical for the rare occasion you may just want to cook a small item.
Side Opening Ovens
Your back is finally saved! Available in single or double, side opening ovens with 180 degree hinges allow easy access to the back of the oven for cleaning ,turning food and transferring dishes, without leaning over the door.
