Only too often we see a beautiful new kitchen loose its impact by poor lighting.
Lighting in the Kitchen is as important a function as the oven and the colours, so ensure that as much effort is put into it. Fortunately the days are gone when a single "flouro" was placed in the middle of the room as although it may have lit up certain areas, you would find that as you stand at your benches the light is normally behind you, therefore casting a shadow on the task in hand.
Now we are blessed in so many options for lighting which will add depth and excitement to the kitchen, making it an inviting and pleasant space to be.
A good plan will engage the three basic types of lighting:
- General Lighting: Also referred to as ambient lighting , this is when the lights radiate comfort and enable one to see and walk about safely . Usually approached with downlights, pendants or wall lights.
- Task Lighting: Very important - "Light the task not the user" ensure that all major tasks in the Kitchen are catered for with lighting, for example washing dishes, food preparation areas, paperwork & menu planning. The are many ways to do this, including undercabinet Halogens or fluorescents.
- Accent Lighting: Creates the drama in the kitchen by creating interest. Can be used in many ways for example wall washers, picture lights, over cabinet lights and the ever faithful dimmer to cater for those romantic moments.
Don't forget that each of these types, incorporate decorative lighting. There are many interesting light fittings available now, along with many different types of bulbs, which can also change the entire mood of your room.
