Appliances - Cooktops

Lets basically split Cooktops in to the two categories: Gas or Electric, however there are also some companies importing Dual Fuel Cooktops:

  • Gas - Available in many sizes 300,600,700,750,900mm and with many different numbers and positioning of Burners. As most cooktops now come with wok burners you should study the positioning of this burner to ensure that you can fit other pots on at the same time. Recently the trend has gone towards cast iron trivets (the stands to place your pots on) for ease of cleaning and ability to use a multitude of pots and griddle plates. Unfortunately they can be quite heavy and more expensive than enamel trivets. Be on the look out for flame failure devices on Cooktops - a great Safety factor as when the flame is blown out the Cooktop automatically cuts off the gas.

Look for Cooktops with front controls as they allow the burners and pots to be more spread out.

  • Electric - Also available in many sizes and layouts. Although still available, the old style coil and solid hotplates have stood aside to Ceran Cooktops. These give a lovely flat surface enabling easy cleaning. Combined with Touch controls these cooktops become a sleek part of the benchtop. With the advancement of modern technology Ceran Cooktops are now a lot quicker in gaining heat than the older electric Cooktop and with the option of induction cooking, electric cooktops are making a comeback in the marketplace.
